Education

Teaching is one of Kenya's most regulated professions. Before any school in Kenya can hire you, there are several requirements you must meet. Here is a complete checklist.
1. TSC Registration is Mandatory
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is the statutory body that employs and registers all teachers in Kenya. You cannot legally teach in a registered Kenyan school without TSC registration.
- Apply for registration at tsc.go.ke
- Requirements include: P1 certificate or degree in education, ID, passport photo, and application fee
- Processing takes 4–8 weeks — apply early
- After registration, you receive a TSC number — this is your professional identifier for life
Private schools may hire unregistered teachers, but TSC-registered candidates are always preferred and command better salaries.
2. Academic Qualifications by Level
Different teaching levels require different qualifications:
- ECDE (Early Childhood) — Certificate in ECDE from a recognised institution
- Primary — P1 Certificate from a Kenya National Examinations Council accredited college
- Secondary — Bachelor of Education (BEd) or degree plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
- University — Master's degree minimum, PhD preferred for full lecturing positions
3. Required Documents for Job Applications
- TSC registration certificate and TSC number
- Academic and professional certificates (originals and copies)
- National ID
- Certificate of Good Conduct (DCI)
- KRA Tax Compliance Certificate
- NHIF and NSSF registration cards
- 2–3 professional references
4. What Schools Look for Beyond Qualifications
- Subject combination — secondary schools look for teachers who can handle 2 subjects
- CBC competency — schools are increasingly seeking teachers trained in Competency Based Curriculum
- Extra-curricular involvement — sports coaching, drama, debate, or clubs coordination
- Classroom management experience — demonstrated through references and interview
5. International and Private Schools
International schools and high-end private schools in Kenya have additional requirements. These may include experience with international curricula (IGCSE, IB, ABEKA), strong English proficiency, and in some cases internationally recognised teaching qualifications.
